Durham Performing Arts Center, Durham, NC

Somerhill Gallery’s architect and friend, Phil Szostak, and his firm, Szostak Design, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, have received a 2009 Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects of North Carolina for their design of the Durham Performing Arts Center in Durham, NC.

The Durham Performing Arts Center is a 2,800 seat proscenium theater, designed to accommodate touring stage shows, concerts, and locally produced performances.

…The theater combines a simply composed, highly efficient theatrical house with a dramatic, multi-level public lobby. Movement upward through the lobby is animated by two grandly scaled staircases that wrap the building’s perimeter. The building’s façade is clad in a thinly drawn curtain wall that features an interplay of clear and fritted insulating glass, focusing attention on prominent interior features of the building, particularly those that frame significant views outward to cityscape.

Recently, DPAC has won the 2009 Durham Golden Leaf Award for design excellence, the 2009 Triangle Commercial Real Estate Women’s Champion Community Enhancement Award, and the 2009 AWI Architectural Woodwork Institute Award for Excellence for interior woodworking and cabinetry (Awarded to Triangle Casework).

Our dear friend and Somerhill artist, Elizabeth Matheson, had a photograph featured on a set of the movie “The Notebook.”

Shown was a stunning photograph entitled “Edenton, 1982.”

Matheson is a native of Hillsborough, NC. She began photographing in 1970 and in 1972 began her studies with John Menapace at the Penland School of Crafts. Her photographs have been exhibited and published widely. Matheson is best known for her delicate and deliberate images that capture a moment in a particular place. The photographer’s intention with the work is “to take a piece of the world and make it (her) own. It’s a celebration of it.” Matheson has an uncanny way of conveying a space just before something happens or in between events.

An Elizabeth Matheson photograph captures the essence of her work–both its elegance and the small details that transform it into something more haunting than merely a beautiful image.
